READING

          After Thanksgiving, our next story is called Officer Buckle and Gloria.  It is a humorous fictional story about a policeman who loves to give safety tips to school children, but nobody every listens – until he brings a dog named Gloria. We will work on main idea and supporting details.  

           

                          MATH

                              

          After Thanksgiving, we will be working on double digit subtraction.  Please practice math facts with your child.

 Student  of the Week

Ohemaa is the Student of the Week!  She likes to ice skate, read books and likes to do math problems .    Her favorite animal is a kitten.  Her favorite color is aqua.   When Ohemaa grows up she wants to be a Scientist.

READING

            Next week we will be working on a culminating task to our Friendship Unit.  We will be writing I messages (I feel… , writing story skits and presenting them to the class .  Our reading logs will be due on December 1^st. 

                          MATH

          Next week we will continue to work on adding 2-digit numbers, problem solving and adding numbers with three addends.  Practicing addition facts will help your child.

Music Program

          On November 16th we will be performing at Lakeview Jr. High.  The children are to wear a “fall colors”. Make sure your child arrives at 6:45. The performance will begin at 7:00.

Aiden is the Student of the Week!  He likes to play soccer, video games and can run fast.  His favorite animal is a dog.  His favorite color is green.   When Aiden grows up he wants to be a Police Officer.

Halloween Party

                    Next week we will be learning about poetry.  We learn how poems have rhyme, rhythm, repetition and beats.  We will do a close reading of a poem.

Halloween Partries/Parade

Please come and watch the parade.  The students should bring their costumes to school in a bag.  We will put them on prior to the parade starting.  Only our parent volunteers will be able to be at the party.  No makeup will be applied at school and no toy weapons are allowed.

           Next week we will be working on fact and opinion.  We will be reading several stories and then write an opinion piece.  Our reading logs are due on November 1^st.  We voted to have a Stuffed Animal Day as a reward. 

Spelling Test will be on Thursday, October 26^th.

   Next week we will be working on number patterns and comparing numbers.  We will be taking our chapter test, addition and subtraction five minute tests.

Elaina is the Student of the Week!  She likes to play the piano, takes swimming lessons and has hermit crabs as pets.  Her favorite animal is a wolf and her favorite color is light blue. When Elaina grows up she wants to a Veterinarian.

The Darien Woodridge Fire Fighters came to talk to us about fire safety.  We learned the importance of getting out of a building safely if there was a fire and to have a meeting place outside.

          Next week we will continue working on our research of hippos and tortoises.  We will be reading a story called Tarra and Bella.  It is a story about an elephant and a dog that form an unique friendship.  We will be comparing this story to Owen and Mzee which also is about two animals who form an unusual friendship. 

                          

 MATH

          Next week we continue writing numbers to 1,000 in different ways.  We will count forward and backwards by 10 and 100 to find the new value of the number.

 READING

          Next week we will be reading a story Next week we will be reading the book called The Name Jar.  This story is about a young girl named Unhei, who moves from Korea and goes to school in America for the first time.  Other children can’t pronounce her name and tease her, so the thinks about choosing an American name.  We will be discussing and writing about how to treat our friends.  Another story we will read is about two unlikely animals that become friends

                   Spelling

Next week we will begin spelling.  We will be using the program Words Their Way.  Each week the children will be working with words and putting the words into sorts.  They will have a spelling test in two weeks.  The test will be on 12 of the words they have been working on at school and home. 

                                     MATH

          Our next chapter is on Number Sense and Place Value.  We will be learning about odd and even numbers, place value and expanded form. 

Please have your child continue to practice math facts.

Social Studies

We are continuing to work on map skills.  We are learning about the directions and how to make a map using a map key and plotting those items on a map.

Student  of the Week

Colin is the Student of the Week!  He likes to play baseball, ride roller coasters and go to Dave and Busters.   His favorite animal is a fossa and his favorite color is blue.   When Colin grows up he wants to be a Paleontologist.

READING

           Our first unit in reading is called “Friendship”.  We will be reading many books and discussing how to be a good friend.  We will talk about character traits that make a good friend.

Next week we will be doing the MAPS testing Monday through Thursday for 30 minutes.  This gives us a way to chart your child’s progress in reading and math.            

Spelling

          Next week I will be sending home a spelling word sort.  This is a practice word sort, so the children learn how to sort their spelling words.  The week of September 18^th, they will come home with their real spelling words to sort and learn.  The first spelling test will be on September 29^th.

                                      MATH

                   Next week we will be working on using drawings and equations to represent problems and repeated addition.  We will have our first chapter test.

Reading Logs

          Our Reading Logs came home for September.  Our class voted to have a “Stuffed Animal Day” as a reward.  Every child who turns in a completed reading log on October 1^st will be able to participate in the “Ice Cream Day”.  Keep reading!!

Snack

          Every day we eat a snack in the morning.  Please make sure you send a snack each day to school.

                              

MATH

          We took a 5 minute addition and subtraction timed test.  These will come home next week.  We will be taking timed tests monthly.  A good way to reinforce our math concepts is to complete their homework assignments and practice the addition and subtraction flashcards.

On Wednesday, September 27th, the Literacy Committee is excited to host the "Bucket Fillers" Team at Elizabeth Ide. We will be having an all school assembly centered around being a "Bucket Filler." You might be asking yourself, "What is a Bucket Filler?" Well, they are those that help someone else without being asked as well as someone that gives compliments and spreads good feelings.

The "Bucket Fillers" Teams mission is:

·  To create a safer, kinder, more respectful school culture where children are ready to learn

·  To create communities where all children grow up confident, resilient, caring, and responsible

·  To strengthen, encourage, and support families to become "bucket filling" families

·  To create a positive and supportive workplace

·  To make bucket filling a habit and a way of life, resulting in individuals with full buckets who are healthy mentally, emotionally, and socially

Each student/family will have the opportunity to purchase their own copy of any of the "Bucket Fillers" books. Order forms will be sent home on Tuesday, September 5th and you will also have a chance to order them at Curriculum Night. Our school will receive 30% of the proceeds. Thank you for your support!
