September 27, 2013

READING

          Next week we will be reading the story
Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day  by Judith Viorst.  This story is about how bad things keep happening to Alexander.  We will be working on the comprehension skill of making text-to-self connections, identifying the important elements in a story and reading independently.

                                     MATH
                  
            Our next chapter is on place value.  We will be counting, reading and writing numbers up to 100.  We will identify the place value of each digit (ones, tens, hundreds).  We will be comparing numbers.  Remember to keep practicing the addition and subtraction flash cards at home.

Science
            We are going to start our chapter about energy in motion.  We will learn how heat and light are forms of energy and can change matter.   I am asking that your child bring to school 2 packages of 3X5 index cards for science.  We will be using them to write our vocabulary words that we will be learning in each chapter.  If you have not sent these in, please send these in by Monday, September 30th.















 
Student  of the Week
Sean is the Student of the Week!  He likes to read books, dance and play soccer.  His favorite animal is a dog and his favorite color is red.   When Sean grows up he wants to be a Teacher.





Reading Logs


        Reading logs are due on October 1st.  All the children who have read for 21 days in September will participate in a reading party.  We ill have lunch in our classroom and watch a movie.  This will be the first week in October.

On Monday, September 30th at 6:30 p.m., there will be Common Core Presentation for parents at Elizabeth Ide School.  This will explain the changes in our Math Curriculum as we implement the common core in math.

READING
       
            Next week we will be reading the story Eat My Dust! Henry Ford’s First Race by Monica Kulling.  This story recounts how Henry Ford won his first car race and used his prize money to realize his dream of building a car that everyone could afford.  We will be working on the comprehension skill of making text-to-self connections and reading independently.  We will also start our writing program called Being a Writer. 
            Next week we will begin spelling.  We will using the program Words Their Way.  Each week the children will be working with words and putting the words into sorts.  They will have a spelling test on Friday.  The test will be on 10 of the words they have been working on all week.  A letter will be coming home on Monday explaining how to do your spelling homework with your child.
                         
                        MATH
           
            In math we are finishing our chapter on addition. We reviewed the strategies adding three numbers and draw a picture to solve a story problem.   We will have a chapter test next week.  Our next chapter will be on subtraction. 
             Please remember to review math facts with your child.

Social Studies
            We have been continuing to work on map skills.  We have learned how to use a compass rose, map grid and map scale when reading maps.





Magazine Drive
The Magazine Drive started this week with a short assembly.  Packets went home with the children.  The class with the most participation and collecting the most money will win a pizza party.  If you need more forms, you may pick them up in the office, or e-mail me and I’ll send them home with your child.

READING
            We have been working on learning our Daily 5 routine.  This is our stations that we use during guided reading.   This week our story was McDuff Moves In by Rosemary Wells.  We worked on the comprehension strategy of text-to-self connections.  We are sharing our reading lives with each other and building a reading community in our classroom.  Next week we will continue to make text-to-self connections with the story Sheila Rae, the Brave by Kevin Henkes.

            Curriculum Night
            Thank you for attending Curriculum Night and signing up to help in the classroom.  If you were unable to make it to Curriculum Night, I have sent home the information that was handed out last night.



 MATH
            In math we are working on adding numbers to 18.  Next week we will be learning the strategy adding three numbers and draw a picture to solve a story problem.  We will be finishing this chapter next week.  We will have our chapter test on Thursday.  Our next chapter will be on subtraction facts and strategies.  
             
Social Studies
            We have been working on map skills.  We learned the difference between using a map and a globe and how to use a map key to read a map. 

Student of the Week
            We will be starting Student of the Week in our classroom.  The children are chosen randomly to be our “Student of the Week”.  When it is your child's turn please make sure you return the poster to us on Monday.  You are invited to be a guest reader in our classroom and read one of your child's favorite books to the class on either Wednesday or Thursday at 2:45 of that week. 
If those times don't work with your schedule, please let me know so we can set up a better time for you to read to the class.  Each day that your child is student of the week they can bring in a show and tell item to share with our class.  We want to learn more about our friends at school!
