December 13, 2013

READING

            Next week we will be doing Christmas Around the world and holiday activities.  We will not be reading a new story until January.  Reading logs are due January 6th. 

                               MATH
                                    We are finishing our chapter on 2-digit subtraction next week.  We will have our chapter test on Thursday.  Our next chapter will be continuing 2-digit subtraction. 
           

Social Studies
             Next week we will be learning about Christmas Around the World.  We will learn about the customs of five different countries in the world.  We will be learning about China, Poland, Sweden, Israel and Mexico.  Look for the Christmas Around the World folder to come home this week.


Science
 Thank you to the PTO for bringing the Willowbrook Wildlife Haven to our school.   We were able to meet the owls “Otis” and “Juneau”.  We learned a lot about owls.  We had fun exploring owl pellets to see what animal bones we could find inside of them. 



Student  of the Week
Natalie is the Student of the Week!  She likes to use her phone, play tennis and has a cat that does tricks.   Her favorite animal is a cat.  Her favorite color is blue.   When Natalie grows up she wants to be a Tennis Player.

READING

            Next week we will be having a writer's workshop on persuasive writing.  The children will be learning how to persuade someone of something through their writing.
                       


                               MATH
                                      We will be finishing our chapter on 2-digit addition.  Our chapter test will be on Monday.  In our next chapter, we will be learning about 2-digit subtraction.  It will be helpful to your child to have them practice subtraction flashcards.

            **Please make sure you send in the following coins in a small container or baggie (with your child's name on it) with the following coins:  20 pennies, 10 nickels, 10 dimes and 7 quarters.**


Holiday Mitten Tree
We are collecting mittens, hats, gloves, and scarves to donate to needy families.  We will be collecting these items until December 19.

READING
            After Thanksgiving, we will be reading the story Galimoto by Karen Lynn Williams.  This story is about a boy who searches for wires to make a toy car, called a galimoto.  We will be working on wondering, making predictions and inferring to understand a story.  We will refer to the text to support their thinking.

           
                          MATH
                               In math we are working on writing two-digit addition problems and solving them, estimating sums and problem solving.  Please remember to practice flash cards daily. After Thanksgiving our mad minute math tests will be on subtraction.

Student  of the Week
Diana is the Student of the Week!  She likes to do math, make creative projects and ride her bike.    Her favorite animal is a dog.  Her favorite color is blue.   When Diana grows up she wants to be a Teacher.

READING

            Next week we will be reading the stories The Incredible Painting by Felix Clousseau by Jon Agee and The Ghost-Eye Tree by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault.  In this story, a brother and sister are fearful of a tree they pass on their way to get a pail of milk on a dark, windy night.  We will be using wondering to understand the story.  The students will make predictions and infer.  They will refer to the story to support their thinking.


                           MATH

                                    In math we are continuing to work on 2-digit addition.  We are solving addition problems with regrouping.   Our chapter test will be next week.  Our next chapter will continue with 2-digit addition.  Please remember to practice flash cards daily.

Social Studies/Science
We are learning about the Pilgrims, the Native American Indians and the First Thanksgiving.  Next week we will learn about the Pilgrims and how the First Thanksgiving was created.  We are finishing our science unit on Motion.  We will have our science test next week.

Recess
          We go outside for recess unless the wind chill is below 20 degrees.  The children will need to bring snow pants and boots in order to play in the snow.  Any child who needs to stay inside for recess will need a doctor's note.

Student  of the Week
Augustas is the Student of the Week!  He likes to swim, ride his motorcycle and make rainbow looms.    His favorite animal is a dog and his favorite color is red.   When Augustas grows up he wants to be a Scientist.

READING

     Next week we will be reading the story Chester’s Way by Kevin Henkes.  In this story, Chester and Wilson are best friends and they share the same way of doing things, until one day Lilly moves into the neighborhood.  We will be using inferences to understand the character’s feelings, motivations and actions.  We will be exploring the text structure in narrative texts to determine the characters and the plot of the story.



                           MATH

                                    In math we started two-digit addition.  We will be using the math vocabulary regrouping.    Please remember to practice flash cards daily.

Science
          We will be finishing our chapter on motion.  We will have our Science test on Friday.  Look for a study guide to come home on Thursday.

Recess
          We go outside for recess unless the wind chill is below 20 degrees.  The children will need to bring snow pants and boots in order to play in the snow.  Any child who needs to stay inside for recess will need a doctor's note.

Student  of the Week
Morgan is the Student of the Week!  He likes to do karate, play minecraft and play with his friends.  His favorite animal is a cat and his favorite color is blue.   When Morgan grows up he wants to be a Call of the Wild Man.

                                  Next week we will be reading the story Erandi’s Braids written by Antonio Hernandez Madrigal.  In this story, Erandi hopes for a new dress for her birthday. Her mother finds holes in the fishing net, which makes Erandi wonder how there will be any money for her birthday gift.  We will be using inferences to understand the character’s feelings, motivations and actions.  We will be exploring the text structure in narrative texts to determine the characters and the plot of the story.

                   MATH
           
            Our next chapter will be on two-digit addition.     We will be exploring how to add 1-digit numbers to 2-digit numbers and then adding 2-digit numbers to 2-digit numbers.  Please remember to practice flash cards daily.

 Student  of the Week
Anna is the Student of the Week!  She likes to do backbends, be on a cheerleading team and play with her dog.    Her favorite animal is a dog and her favorite color is pink.   When Anna grows up she wants to be a Superstar.




Halloween Party
Thank you to Ms. Moy for organizing our party.  Thank you to Mrs. Donaldson, Mrs. Downes and Mrs. Kelliher for making our party a lot of fun with the activities.  Thank you Mrs. Daly, Mrs. Donaldson, Mrs. Ciocan, Mrs. Olson, Mrs. Teeter and Mrs. Espinoza for the treats.  We had a great time!

READING

          Next week we will be reading the story What Mary Jo Shared written by Janice May Udry.  In this story, Mary Jo uses an original idea to solve the problem of what to share with her class.  We will be using inferences to understand the character’s feelings, motivations and actions.  We will be exploring the text structure in narrative texts to determine the characters and the plot of the story.

          In math we are working on the number patterns that  focus on odd/even numbers, greater than, less than and equal to when comparing numbers (<,>,=) and number patterns on a 100's chart

Student  of the Week
Tristen is the Student of the Week!  He plays on a baseball team, is a yellow belt in Tae Kwon do, and is very creative with building things.  His favorite animal is a cat and his favorite color is blue.   When Tristen grows up he wants to be a Meteorologist.

READING

            Next week we will be reading the story The Paperboy by Dav Pilkey.  This story is about a paperboy and his dog and how they enjoy the quiet of the morning as they deliver the newspapers.   We will be working on the comprehension skill of visualizing to make sense of the text and reading independently.

                             
MATH

 In math we started our chapter on number patterns . We will be learning about ordinal numbers, greater than, less than, odd and even numbers and skip counting.  Please remember to practice flash cards daily.

Student  of the Week
Sophia is the Student of the Week!  She likes to play with the skip-it, she is learning how to roller skate and is good at playing Minecraft.  Her favorite animal is a puppy and her favorite color is pink.   When Sophia grows up she wants to be a Dress Designer or a Hair Dresser.

Thank you to everyone who signed up for our parent/teacher conferences.  I look forward to meeting with you on the week of November 4th.

We had earned 10 class paws for good behavior!  We celebrated with a popcorn party today.  Keep up the great job.

READING
          Next week we will be reading the story
Poppleton and Friends by Cynthia Rylant.  This story is about how Poppleton has dry skin and his friend Cherry Sue tries to help him get rid of it.    We will be working on the comprehension skill of making inferences while visualizing to make sense of the text and reading independently.
                               MATH
                       In math we will finish our chapter on number concepts and patterns. Our test will be next week.  Our next chapter will be on 2-digit addition.  Please remember to practice flash cards daily.  This will help when we are learning 2-digit addition and subtraction.

  Fire Safety Field Trip
Firefighter Jamie Tunk talked about fire safety.  We had a tour of the firehouse, saw the inside of an ambulance, the equipment on fire engines, we squirted the firehose and we watched our teacher put out a fire.  He also showed us the special gear that firemen wear for protection.  It was a great trip!

Andrew is the Student of the Week!  He likes to run fast, play basketball and can write with both hands.  His favorite animal is a cheetah and his favorite color is gold.   When Andrew grows up he wants to be a Basketball Player.
