May 30, 2014



READING
            We will be doing some reading/writing end of the year activities. We will be working on writing activities to reflect over the things we liked about second grade and what we will miss when we move on to third grade.

           
                   MATH
                                   
             We started a new chapter on place value.  We will be comparing and ordering larger numbers and skip counting to find out the pattern and the rule to follow.  Our next chapter will be on 3-digit addition.  Please have your child review the addition and subtraction facts.


Science
            We are learning about the food groups and the food pyramid from Little D and the Royal Food Family.  We have been talking about the right kinds of snacks to eat. 


Olsats
            The Olsat tests are in the office.  If you would like a copy of them, send in a self-addressed, stamped envelope and they will be mailed to you.  You can also stop in the office to request a copy of the results.

READING
            Next week we will be working on a theme review this week.  We will read two stories about Families.  One story is called A Curve in the River which is a realistic fiction.  It is about a little boy who sends a message in a bottle.  The second story called   Slippery Siblings which is a non-fiction story.  We will compare and contrast the stories.  We will review contractions, word families, and homophones.
 

           
                   MATH
                                   
            We are continuing to work on writing larger numbers and knowing the value of them.  We will have our chapter test on Thursday.  Our next chapter will be on comparing and ordering greater numbers.


Science
            We are learning about the food groups and the food pyramid from Little D and the Royal Food Family.  We have been talking about the right kinds of snacks to eat. 


Field Trip
          We had a great time going to the DuPage Children’s Museum.  Thank you to our chaperones Mrs. Daly, Mrs. Downes and Mr. Moy for helping us to explore the museum and creating our geo-boxes.  We had a great time!

READING
            After spring break, we will be reading a story called Carousel.  It is a realistic story about a girl named Alex whose father doesn't get home in time for her birthday.  This makes Alex angry, but after a night filled with strange dreams, she awakens to find that her father has returned.  
          In phonics we will be focusing on words that end in -y and the un- prefix..
          Vocabulary words are angry, fussed, groaned, grumbled, grumpily and promised.
          Comprehension strategy is making judgments.
          In grammar we will be working on past tense verbs.


           
                   MATH
                                    In math we are starting a chapter on place value to the hundreds place.  Please remember to continue to practice flashcards with your child.

Science
We are learning about nutrition and eating healthy.  
We will be learning about the five food groups and what foods belong in each group.

Field Trip
On Wednesday, May 21st we will be going on our field trip to the DuPage Children’s Museum.  We will be leaving at 9:00, so please make sure your child is on time for school.  Please make sure they have a sack lunch.  We will be eating in our classroom when we return from the museum.  No hot lunch will be served that day.

READING
          We will be reading the story called The Art Lesson.  It is about a boy named Tommy who loves to draw pictures.  When he is old enough for art classes at school, Tommy is disappointed to learn that he can only have one piece of paper, and only use eight crayons.
          The vocabulary words are crayons, powders, practice, chalk, smock, ruin and copy.
          In phonics we will be focusing on words with the vowel pairs oo, ew, ue, and ou.  We will review base words with the endings -ed and -ing.
                   Comprehension strategy is evaluating, understanding, problem solving and making judgments.
          In grammar we will be working on irregular verbs.
  
Pen Pals
          The children in Ms. Stetka’s third grade class are our pen pals.  We received our letters from them and we will be writing letters back to them.  We will be visiting our pen pals at Prairie View School on June 6.

           
                   MATH
                             In math we are learning about fractions. We will be working on the vocabulary unit fractions, equal parts and whole parts.  We will have our test on this chapter on Friday.

Science
          We have started a unit on nutrition.  We are learning about the five food groups and how those foods help us to grow. 

TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK
A special thank you to the PTO for organizing all the special treats this week.  The candy was delicious and the flowers are absolutely beautiful!  I love teaching your children. They are very special to me.  I have truly enjoyed working with each one of them this year.  I will be sad to see them go on to third grade.  I will miss them very much.
          Thank you to all of you who participated in this
week’s meals.  The food was very good and it was so nice of you to think of the teachers.  It was very much appreciated!

READING
                        We will be reading the story called Moses Goes to a Concert.  This is a realistic story about a deaf boy names Moses, who goes to a concert.  The deaf percussionist helps Moses and his classmates realize they can be anything they want.
            The vocabulary words are deaf, instruments, signs, hearing, percussion, vibration.
            In phonics we will be focusing on words with the long i vowel sound (igh, ie).
                        Comprehension strategy is noting details.
            In grammar, we will be working on adjectives.
 
           
                   MATH
                                    We will be finishing our unit on measurement and take our chapter test on Wednesday.  Our next chapter will be on fractions.  Remember to keep practicing flashcards with your child.

MAPS Testing
Next week we will be taking the MAPS test on Monday and Wednesday.  Please make sure your child gets plenty of rest and eats a good breakfast.

Science
            We have had eight butterflies emerge from their chrysalises.  We have watched them grow and develop into the adult stage.  It was time to say good-bye.
We let our butterflies go out into nature.  We enjoyed learning about the development of butterflies.  We were sad to see them go.
