READING
Our next two stories are in our Theme Wrap-Up. The first one is called Grandpa's Corner Store It is about when a giant supermarket opens in the neighborhood Lucy tries to help her Grandfather save his small corner grocery store. The second story is called Barrio: Jose's Neighborhood it is about a San Francisco neighborhood. We will be comparing these stories with the other literature we have read in our theme.
In phonics we will be focusing on the the vowel pairs ai, ay and the endings -er and -est.
Vocabulary words are deliveries, grocery store, flyer, success, grand opening, supermarket, burrio, harvest, customs, fiesta and traditions.
Comprehension strategies are summarizing and making inferences.
In grammar we will be working on special nouns .

Reading Logs are due on Wednesday, February 1st.


MATH
In math we will finished our chapter on money. Our next chapter will be on telling time. We will be learning to tell time to the quarter hour and in 5 minute increments. Practice telling time at home with your child.


Student of the Week
Ryan is the Student of the Week! He likes to read books with his brother, build legos and go sledding. His favorite animal is a cheetah His favorite color is brown. When Ryan grows up he wants to be a Lego Builder.


Valentine’s Day Party
On Tuesday, Feb. 14th we will have a Valentine's Day party. Your child may bring one valentine for every child in the class (23 students). Please have your child address each card (class list). Bring the cards to school in a bag with your child’s name on it.

READING
Next week we will be having a writer's workshop on persuasive writing. The children will be learning how to persuade someone of something through their writing.
In phonics we will be focusing on the digraphs th, wh, sh, ch and the long vowel sounds of e and a.
In grammar we will be working on combining sentences.

MATH
In math we finished our chapter on money and had our chapter test this week. Our next chapter will continue with money. We will be learning how to make change, add and subtract money amounts and learn about the decimal point and dollar sign.

Student of the Week
Oskar is the Student of the Week! He likes to read books about animals, runs very fast and he likes to do math problems. His favorite animal is a jaguar. His favorite color is red. When Oskar grows up he wants to be a Police Officer.

Supplies Needed
Each child needs to bring in a shoe box for making a valentine holder. The box needs a lid that fits on the box. Make sure your child's name is on the box.

READING
Next week we will be reading a story called The Big Bushy Mustache. It about a boy who gets a part in a school play. The mustache he wears in the play makes him look like his father, so he wears it home. Unfortunately, he loses it.
In phonics we will be focusing on the the vowel pairs ou, ow and the suffixes -ly and -ful.
Vocabulary words are bushy, costume, disguise, handsome, mirror, behind, soldier, story and mustache.
Comprehension strategies are predict/infer and problem solving.
In writing we will be working on writing a paragraph with a problem and solution.
In grammar we will be working on plurals.

MATH

We started counting on using various coins. We are counting with half-dollars, quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies. Next week we will finish this chapter on money with a chapter test. Our next chapter continues with counting money.

Student of the Week
Brenna is the Student of the Week! She likes to play soccer, swim on the Hornet swim club and has a lot of friends. Her favorite animal is a dolphin. Her favorite color is green. When Brenna grows up she wants to be a Teacher.


Social Studies
We are learning about Martin Luther King Jr., and his beliefs and dreams for a better world.
Recess
We go outside for recess unless the wind chill is below 20 degrees. The children need to bring snow pants and boots in order to play in the snow. Any child who needs to stay inside for recess will need a doctor's note.

READING

Next week we will be administering the MAP test on January 10th and 12th. This is a test taken on the computer and replaces the IOWA tests. Please make sure your child gets plenty of rest and eats a good breakfast on those days.

MATH
In math we finished our chapter on data and graphs. Our chapter test will be on Monday. We will be working on money next.

Handwriting
We will be starting to learn how to write letters in cursive. I will be sending home homework to practice the letters we are working on in school.
Science
Next week we will be starting a new unit in Science on The Earth. We will be learning about land, rocks, minerals and fossils.

Social Studies
We are learning about Martin Luther King Jr., and his beliefs and dreams for a better world. We are finishing our chapter on America Long Ago, we will be having a unit test next week.

Holiday Party
Thank you to Mrs. Schoeberle for organizing our holiday party. Thank you to Mrs. Mulcahy, Mrs. O'Connor, Mr. Sapiega and Mrs. Schoeberle for the games at the party. Thank you to Mrs. Joseph, Mrs. Mulcahy and Mrs. Sapeiga for our party treats. We had a great time!

Reading Logs
We did not have many children turn in their reading logs for the month of December. Please remember to have your child read for 20 minutes daily and record it on their logs. This is part of their homework assignments. Our January logs will be due on February 1st.
