January 31, 2014




READING

            Next week, we will continue reading the story The Big, Bushy Mustache.              In phonics  we will be focusing on the the vowel pairs ou, ow and the suffixes -ly and -ful.
            Vocabulary words are bushy, costume, disguise, handsome, mirror, behind, soldier, story and mustache.
            Comprehension strategies are predict/infer and problem solving.
            In writing we will be working on writing a paragraph with a problem and solution.
            In grammar we will be working on plurals.

Reading Logs are due on Monday, February 3rd.


           
                   MATH
                                   
          
            Next week we will be finishing our chapter on Data and Graphs.  We will have a chapter test on Wednesday.  Our next chapter will be on Probability.
We will be working on money soon.   If you haven’t sent in the coins please do so as soon as possible.
            **Please make sure you send in the following coins in a small container or baggie (with with your child's name on it) with the following coins:  20 pennies, 10 nickels, 10 dimes and 7 quarters.**

Science
Our next chapter will be on animals.  We will be learning about mammals, birds, reptiles, fish,  and amphibians.

Service Project
We are collecting 100 can of food for the West Suburban Food Pantry.  We will be collecting these items until our 100th day of school which will be on Feb. 13th.  Thank you.

READING
            Next week we will be reading about a read park ranger from New York City and the things that he does each day as part of his job. 
            We will be working on the comprehension strategies of fact and opinion, rereading for understanding and making generalizations.  
            Our vocabulary words are exploring, protect, tours, habitat, ranger and urban.
            In phonics we will be focusing on consonant clusters (r, l, s) and the two sounds for c. 
            In grammar we will be writing command sentences.
Reading Logs are due on Monday, February 3rdt. The class voted to have a “Show and Tell” Day for their reward.  I will send details when they have finished their logs for January.


           
                   MATH
                                    In math we will be finishing our chapter on 2-digit subtraction.  Our chapter test will be on Tuesday.    Our next chapter will be on data and graphs.  Please remember to practice flash cards daily.
We will be working on money soon.

  Student  of the Week
Noah is the Student of the Week!  He likes to go fishing, play soccer and play the video game Minecraft.    His favorite animal is an dog.  His favorite color is blue.   When Noah grows up he wants to be a Policeman.




Science
            We started a new unit on living things.  We are learning the difference between non-living and living things and what animals and plants need in order to survive.

Handwriting
            We will be starting to learn how to write letters in cursive.   I will be sending home homework to practice the letters we are working on in school.

READING

                        Next week we will be reading a variety of fairy tales to compare their points of view. We will be discussing character, setting, problem and solution.  We will see how point of view affects the outcome of a story.
            Next week we will be taking the MAPS test on Monday and Thursday.  Make sure your child gets plenty of rest and eats a good breakfast.

                               MATH
                                   
            In math we are continuing to work on 2-digit subtraction.  We will be using addition problems to help us solve subtraction problems, estimating differences, problems solving and using mental math to find the differences.  Please remember to practice flash cards daily.


Science
Scientists from Turtle Wax came to our class to teach us about Periodic Table of the Elements of Science.  We used those ingredients to design and make our own car wash soap.  This was part of the Junior Achievement Program which taught them about the careers in science and chemistry.  The team of scientists worked together to make a product that in the future could be a product on the market.  We had a great time learning about how we use science in our everyday lives.
           

Reading Logs
We did not have many children turn in their reading logs for the month of December.  Please remember to have your child read for 20 minutes daily and record it on their logs.  This is part of their homework assignments.  Our January logs will be due on February 3rd.

Holiday Party
Thank you to Ms. Moy for organizing our holiday party.  Thank you to Mr. Moy, Mrs. Guisinger, Mrs. Daly and Mrs. Richel for the games at the party.  Thank you to Mrs. Daly, Mrs. Olson, Mrs. Richel, Mrs. Donaldson and Mrs. Kelliher for the treats.  We had a great time!
