September 30, 2016

Reading
              Next week we will be researching the hippopotamus and the tortoise.  We will be writing a paragraph on one of the animals after we learn facts and information about them. 

                          MATH
          Next week we will be working on counting forwards and backwards, looking for patterns and problem solving.  We will have a chapter test next week. 
Reading Logs
          The children did a great job of turning in their reading logs for September!  They earned a “Stuffed Animal Day”.  For the month of October we will be working towards a Pizza Hut Coupon and a pajama day in the classroom.

Anna is the Student of the Week!  She has two pet cats, a pet lizard and likes to do gymnastics.  Her  favorite animal is a cat and her favorite color is black.   When Anna grows up, she wants to be an Animal Breeder.

READING

           Next week we will be researching the hippopotamus and the tortoise.  We will be writing a paragraph on one of the animals after we learn facts and information about them. 

                                     MATH
            Next week we will be learning about different ways to write numbers up to 1,000.  We will be looking for patterns within numbers and use the strategy of counting on and counting back. 

 Student  of the Week
Logan is the Student of the Week!  He likes to play baseball, build with legos and go fishing.  His favorite animal is a tiger and his favorite colors are blue and red.  When Logan grows up he wants to be a Cubs Baseball Player.



Reading Logs
        Reading logs are due on September 30th or October 3rd.  All the children who have read for 21 days in September will participate in a stuffed animal day  reward. 

Book Fair
            Thank you to all the children who gave our class a gift certificate to purchase books.  We will enjoy reading them!  I appreciate your thoughtfulness!  Thank you PTO for hosting this special event!

READING

          Next week we will be reading a story Next week we will be reading the book called The Name Jar.  This story is about a young girl named Unhei, who moves from Korea and goes to school in America for the first time.  Other children can’t pronounce her name and tease her, so the thinks about choosing an American name.  We will be discussing and writing about how to treat our friends.  Another story we will read is about two unlikely animals that become friends

                                     MATH
          Next week we will be working on reading and writing 3-digit numbers.  Please practice addition and subtraction facts with your child.


 Student  of the Week
Robbie is the Student of the Week!  He likes to play soccer, wrestle and go to WWE events.   His favorite animal is a dog and his favorite colors are green, blue and pink.   When Robbie grows up he wants to be a You-tuber.




Reading Logs
        Reading logs are due on either September 30th or October 3rd.  All the children who have read for 21 days in September will participate in a stuffed animal day reward. 
Social Studies
We are continuing to work on map skills.  We are learning about the directions and how to make a map using a map key and plotting those items on a map.

READING
             Our first unit in reading is called “Friendship”.  We will be reading many books and discussing how to be a good friend.  We will talk about character traits that make a good friend.
            Next week we will begin spelling.  We will using the program Words Their Way.  Each week the children will be working with words and putting the words into sorts.  They will have a spelling test in two weeks.  The test will be on 12 of the words they have been working on at school and home. 
                                                MATH
                        Next week we will be finishing our chapter on number concepts.  Our next chapter will be on numbers up to 1,000.  Please make sure your child is practicing their addition and subtraction facts. 

IPADS
            Your child will be bringing home their Ipads today.  Please make sure you return it to school fully charged.  We will be using them in class daily.   They need to make sure they bring it to school since we don’t have any extra ipads in class.

READING
            We have been working on learning our Daily 5 routine.  This is our stations that we use during guided reading.   This week our story was McDuff Moves In by Rosemary Wells.  We worked on the comprehension strategy of text-to-self connections.  We are sharing our reading lives with each other and building a reading community in our classroom. 

Spelling
          Next week I will be sending home a spelling word sort.  This is a practice word sort, so the children learn how to sort their spelling words.  The week of September 12th, they will come home with their real spelling words to sort and learn.  I will go over this in more detail at Curriculum Night.

Reading Logs
            Our Reading Logs came home for September.  Our class voted to have a “Stuffed Animal Day” as a reward.  Every child who turns in a completed reading log on October 1st will be able to participate in the “Stuffed Animal Day”.  Keep reading!!
  
MATH
            Next week we will be working on writing numbers in different ways, problem solving and counting patterns within 100 and 1,000.      

Social Studies
            We have been working on map skills.  We learned the difference between using a map and a globe and how to use a map key to read a map.
