March 28, 2014


READING
            After spring break, we will be reading a story called Ant.  It is a photo essay about the different kinds of ants that are found throughout the world.  We will talk about how ants work together to get food, and about the kinds of things that ants eat..
            In phonics  we will be focusing on the word endings -nd, -nt, -mp, -ng, -nk, base words and endings in nouns -s, -es, -ies.
            Vocabulary words are antennae, colonies, larvae, cocoons, fungus, and tunnels.
            Comprehension strategies are rereading for understanding, cause and effect, and fact and opinion.
                        In grammar we will be working on singular and possessive nouns.

           
                   MATH
                                   
          We will be finishing our chapter on spatial shapes and have a chapter test after spring break.  Our next chapter is on plane figures and spatial sense.  We will be learning how to identify plane shapes, plane figures and combining the figures to make shapes.

Science
            After Spring Break, we will be studying the animals from the rain forest.  A good resource for gathering information on your child’s animal is worldbookonline.  Below is the information for your child to access this website at home:

Reading Logs
            The reading logs for March are due April 7th.  March will be the last month for the Pizza Hut coupons.  We will continue our reading logs for April and May. 


Student  of the Week
Hannah is the Student of the Week!  She likes to do swim, sing and do fun things with her family.   Her favorite animal is a koala bear . Her favorite colors are all the colors.   When Hannah grows up she wants to be an Actress.

READING
          Our next story is called The Great Ball Game: A Muskogee Story.  It is a fable about how the birds and animals play ball to decide who is better.  The birds don't allow the bat on their team, but he ends up winning the game for the animals.
          In phonics we will be focusing on the vowels pairs oa and ow. 
          Vocabulary words are  accept, advantage, argument, penalty, quarrel, and guarded.
          Comprehension strategies are rereading for understanding, cause and effect, and summarizing.
                   In grammar we will be working on plural possessive nouns.


           
                   MATH
                       
          Our new chapter is about solid figures.  We will be identifying, sorting naming attributes of solid figures.  Some of our new math vocabulary will be sphere, cone, cube, cylinder, pyramid, rectangular prism, face, edge, vertex and vertices.
           
Science
          After Spring Break, we will be studying the Rainforest.  Your child is bringing home some important information about our Rainforest Project and Poster.  Your child will be selecting and researching information about a rainforest animal.  We will be writing an Animal Report in school.  You may use the internet or books from the library to get your information.  The animal sheet is due April 9th, but if it is done sooner,  you can send it to school with your child.  They will also be making an animal poster on their chosen animal.  The poster will not be due until April 16th.

READING
                         Next week we will be doing a personal narrative workshop.  We will focus on the traits of voice, conventions, and presentation.  When a piece of writing has voice it has personality.  We will be writing about an experience that matters to them, focus on details and choose words that will show clearly how they feel. 
          We will be focusing on using possessive nouns and reviewing verbs. 
We will not be doing spelling next week.

           
                   MATH
                                   
In math we worked on telling time after the hour in 5 minute increments, telling time before the hour, make reasonable estimates and determine how much time has passed from start to finish. 

Reading Logs
The reading logs for March are due April 2nd.  March will be the last month for the Pizza Hut coupons.  We will continue our reading logs for April and May. 


Student  of the Week
Zoe is the Student of the Week!  She likes to do gymnastics, is creative and plays with her sister. Her favorite animal is dog. Her favorite color is yellow.   When Zoe grows up she wants to be a Gymnastics Teacher.

READING
                                                                                       
        Our next story is called Officer Buckle and Gloria.  It is a humorous fictional story about a policemen who loves to give safety tips to school children, but nobody every listens – until he brings a dog named Gloria.
            In phonics we will be focusing on the the vowel pairs ow and oa, r-controlled vowels or and ar, and the endings -tion and -ture.
            Vocabulary words are accident, audience, officer, attention, commands, and safety.
            Comprehension strategies are drawing conclusions and monitor/clarify.
                        In grammar we will be working on nouns and pronouns .

           
           
                   MATH
                                   
            Our next chapter is on telling time.  We are going to learn to tell time to the quarter hour and in 5 minute increments.  Practice telling time at home with your child.

We had a great time at the play “Teacher from the Black Lagoon”. 

Student  of the Week
Lucas is the Student of the Week!  He likes swim, play the piano and go skiing. His favorite animal is dog. His favorite color is green.   When Lucas grows up he wants to be a Lawyer.
