September 26, 2014

READING

          Next week we will be reading the book called The Name Jar.  This story is about a young girl named Unhei, who moves from Korea and toes to school in America for the first time.  Other children can’t pronounce her name and tease her, so the thinks about choosing an American name.  We will be discussing and writing about how to treat our friends.

                                     MATH
          We are finishing our chapter on addition strategies.  We will have our chapter test on Tuesday.  Our next topic will be covering subtraction strategies.


Student  of the Week
Reagan is the Student of the Week!  She likes to watch TV, play softball and do cheerleading.  Her favorite animal is a puppy and his favorite color is indigo.   When Reagan grows up she wants to be a Hair Salon Owner.




Reading Logs
        Reading logs are due on October 1st.  All the children who have read for 21 days in September will participate in a reading reward. 

Second Grade Musical
Hello 2nd Grade Parents,
I am excited to announce that our 2nd grade musical will be Thursday, November 20th at 7PM in the Lakeview gymnasium. Please mark your calendars! Students will be listening to their show this week in music class. Some students may even get a speaking part! READING
                      Next week we will be two stories on friendship.  We will be comparing and contrasting the characters in the story.  We will continue to work on writing skills when writing stories.

MATH
                      We started topic 2 in math.  We will be learning addition strategies for adding near doubles, adding in any order and adding three numbers.  Remember to practice flashcards with your child. 

Social Studies
            We are continuing to work on map skills.  We are learning about the directions and how to make a map using a map key and plotting those items on a map.


Reading Logs
        Reading logs are due on October 1st.  All the children who have read for 21 days in September will have a reward.  Keep reading!

Book Fair
            Thank you to all the children who gave our class a gift certificate to purchase books.  We will enjoy reading them!  I appreciate your thoughtfulness!  Thank you PTO for hosting this special event!

READING
       
            Next week we will be reading the story Eat My Dust! Henry Ford’s First Race by Monica Kulling.  This story recounts how Henry Ford won his first car race and used his prize money to realize his dream of building a car that everyone could afford.  We will be working on the comprehension skill of making text-to-self connections and reading independently. 
            Next week we will begin spelling.  We will using the program Words Their Way.  Each week the children will be working with words and putting the words into sorts.  They will have a spelling test in two weeks.  The test will be on 12 of the words they have been working on for the two weeks.  A letter will be coming home on Monday explaining how to do your spelling homework with your child.
                                                MATH
           
            In math we are working on addition and subtraction problem solving.  We are writing related addition and subtraction sentences, separating parts from the whole and comparing two groups to solve a problem.
             Please remember to review math facts with your child.

Curriculum Night
            Thank you for attending Curriculum Night and signing up to help in the classroom.  If you were unable to make it to Curriculum Night, I have sent home the information that was handed out at Curriculum  Night.

READING
            We have been working on learning our Daily 5 routine.  This is our stations that we use during guided reading.   This week our story was McDuff Moves In by Rosemary Wells.  We worked on the comprehension strategy of text-to-self connections.  We are sharing our reading lives with each other and building a reading community in our classroom. 

            Next week we will be doing the MAPS testing on Monday and Tuesday.  Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep and eats a good breakfast.  This gives us a way to chart your child’s progress in reading and math


Curriculum Night
            Just a reminder that Curriculum Night is on September 9th at 6:00.  I look forward to seeing you there!
 


MATH
            This week we started Math with Understanding Addition and Subtraction.  This unit teaches the children when to use addition and subtraction and also helps to reinforce number sense.


Social Studies
            We have been working on map skills.  We learned the difference between using a map and a globe and how to use a map key to read a map.
