READING

      Our next story is called Officer Buckle and Gloria.  It is a humorous fictional story about a policemen who loves to give safety tips to school children, but nobody every listens – until he brings a dog named Gloria.
                        Vocabulary words attention, swivel, commands and popped.
            Comprehension strategies are main idea and supporting details.
                        In grammar we will be working on contractions.

           
                   MATH
                                    We are finishing our chapter on 2-digit subtraction next week.  We will have our chapter test on Thursday.  Our next chapter will be continuing 2-digit subtraction.

Daisy is the Student of the Week!  She likes play soccer, sing and play with her sister.   Her favorite animal is a horse.  Her favorite color is blue.   When Daisy grows up she wants to be a Teacher.

READING

           
   
            Next week we will be doing Christmas Around the world and holiday activities.  We will not be reading a new story until January.  Reading logs are due January 5th.                  

MATH
           We will continue working on double digit subtraction next week.  We will be solving problems with regrouping.  It is helpful for your child to know their subtraction facts.  Please review them with your child.
         
Social Studies
             Next week we will be learning about Christmas Around the World.  We will learn about the customs of five different countries in the world.  We will be learning about China, Poland, Sweden, Israel and Mexico.  Look for the Christmas Around the World folder to come home this week.


 Student  of the Week
Chaz is the Student of the Week!  He likes Halloween, eating candy and playing soccer.   His favorite animal is a dog.  His favorite color is red.   When Chaz grows up he wants to be a Firefighter.

READING

          Next week we will be having a writer's workshop.  The children will be learning how to inform someone of what good qualities are needed to make good friendships.  We will write a rough draft, go through the editing process and write a final copy.
                       


           
                   MATH
                                      We finished our chapter on 2-digit addition.  Our chapter test will be on Monday.  In our next chapter, we will be learning about 2-digit subtraction.  It will be helpful to your child to have them practice subtraction flashcards.

Reading Logs
          For the month of November the class earned an extra recess for turning in their reading logs.  Let’s try to get 100% reading logs turned in for the month of December.

Holiday Mitten Tree
          We are collecting mittens, hats, gloves, and scarves to donate to needy families.  We will be collecting these items until December 17.

READING
            Next week we will be reading the book How to Be a Friend.  We will be using this book to discuss cause/effect on events from the story and relate them to our lives.
           
                          MATH
                              
            We started our chapter on regrouping with addition and we will continue with this chapter after Thanksgiving.  We will be regrouping (carrying)  to add double-digits in an addition problem.

Social Studies
We are learning about the Pilgrims, the Native American Indians and the First Thanksgiving.  Next week we will learn about the Pilgrims and how the First Thanksgiving was created.

The children did a great job at the musical last night!  Thank you to Ms. Wyse for leading such a great show!  I am very proud of them!

READING
           
            Next week we will be reading a story called Tarra and Bella.  It is a story about an elephant and a dog that form an unique friendship.  We will be comparing this story to Owen and Mzee which also is about two animals who form an unusual friendship. 
                         
MATH
           Next week we will be finishing our chapter on Mental Subtraction.  Our next chapter will be on solving addition problems with regrouping.  Make sure you child is practicing their math facts, this will help when we start the chapter on regrouping.            

Music Program
          On November 20 we will be performing at Lakeview Jr. High.  Make sure your child arrives at 6:45.  The performance will begin at 7:00.

READING

     Next week we will be researching the hippopotamus and the tortoise.  We will be writing a paragraph on one of the animals after we learn facts and information about them.  We will be learning about pronouns.


                           MATH

                                    In math we start a new topic on mental subtraction.  We will learn strategies to find parts of 100 and subtracting multiples of 10. 

Junior Achievement
Today we had our first session with Ms. Sallie Lupescu from the McDonald’s Corporation.  She is teaching us about communities, jobs and businesses. 

Recess
          We go outside for recess unless the wind chill is below 20 degrees.  The children will need to bring snow pants and boots in order to play in the snow.  Any child who needs to stay inside for recess will need a doctor's note.


  
Snack
Please remember when packing your child’s snack for school that peanuts and peanut products are not allowed for snack time due to peanut allergies.

                        Next week we will continue reading and doing activities with the story Owen and Mzee.  We will be comparing it to other books we have read on friendship.  We will work on collective nouns.

            Next week we will be working adding multiples of 10 and problem solving.  Our Topic Test will be next Friday.  Our next chapter will be on mental math subtraction.

Alana is the Student of the Week!  She likes to do gymnastics, karate and play on her kindle.    Her favorite animals are a dog and cat  and her favorite color is purple.   When Alana grows up she wants to be a Lawyer.

            Next week we will be continuing with our story Owen and Mzee.  We will be comparing it with another story on friendship by using a Venn Diagram.  This week we did a Halloween Descriptive Writing activity.  We learned about adjectives and used them in our writing.

                             MATH

 
                            Next week in math we will start a new topic called Mental Addition.  We will be adding two-digit numbers.

Liam is the Student of the Week!  He likes to play basketball, build with legos and has a little brother.  His favorite animal is dog and his favorite colors are rainbows.   When Liam grows up he wants to an Airport Worker.

Please come and watch the parade.  The students should bring their costumes to school in a bag.  We will put them on prior to the parade starting.  Only our parent volunteers will be able to be at the party.  No makeup will be applied at school and no toy weapons are allowed

Please remember to send in a mini flashlight with your child’s name on it for our Music Concert.  You will get the flashlights back after the concert.

READING
            Next week we will be reading a story about two unlikely animals that become friends.  We will be reading to find out the author’s purpose of the story.  We will work on possessive and plural nouns.

                             MATH
 
                             Next week in math we will be working on counting to 100, subtracting and adding 10 to a given number, even and odd numbers and using data from a chart.

Dominick is the Student of the Week!  He likes to play games on the computer, play basketball and has a lot of friends.  His favorite animal is a dog and his favorite color is red.   When Dominick grows up he wants to be an Artist.

Reading

          In reading, we will be doing a “Close Reading” of an article.  We will be doing three reads and focus on the main idea, the author’s purpose and being able to connect the article to another text. 

                          MATH
                  
          In math we started our topic on subtraction strategies.  Next week we will be working on using addition to subtract in order to solve problems.  We also took our addition and subtraction timed tests for the month of September.  The children are improving!  Keep working on addition and subtraction flashcards.


 Student  of the Week
Alex is the Student of the Week!  He likes to go swimming, build with legos and minecraft.   His favorite animal is a zebra and his favorites color are blue and red.   When Alex grows up, he wants to be a Policeman.

  

Fire Safety Assembly
Firefighter Tony came to our school on Thursday and talked about fire safety.  We learned about choosing a special meeting place in case of a fire, how to “stop, drop and roll”, and that we should never go back inside to get something we forgot.  He also showed us the special gear that firemen wear for protection.

READING

          Next week we will be reading the book called The Name Jar.  This story is about a young girl named Unhei, who moves from Korea and toes to school in America for the first time.  Other children can’t pronounce her name and tease her, so the thinks about choosing an American name.  We will be discussing and writing about how to treat our friends.

                                     MATH
          We are finishing our chapter on addition strategies.  We will have our chapter test on Tuesday.  Our next topic will be covering subtraction strategies.


Student  of the Week
Reagan is the Student of the Week!  She likes to watch TV, play softball and do cheerleading.  Her favorite animal is a puppy and his favorite color is indigo.   When Reagan grows up she wants to be a Hair Salon Owner.

        Reading logs are due on October 1st.  All the children who have read for 21 days in September will participate in a reading reward. 

Second Grade Musical
