READING
            Our next story is called The Great Ball Game: A Muskogee Story.  It is a fable about how the birds and animals play ball to decide who is better.  The birds don't allow the bat on their team, but he ends up winning the game for the animals.
            In phonics  we will be focusing on the vowels pairs oa and ow. 
            Vocabulary words are accept, advantage, argument, penalty, quarrel, and guarded.
            Comprehension strategies are rereading for understanding, cause and effect, and summarizing.
                        In grammar we will be working on plural possessive nouns.  


           
                               MATH
                                   
            Our new chapter is on plane figures and spatial sense.  We will be learning how to identify plane shapes, plane figures and combining the figures to make shapes.


  Student  of the Week
Juli is the Student of the Week!  She likes being a girl scout, coloring and reading.   Her favorite animal is a golden retriever.  Her favorite colors are pink and purple.   When Juli grows up she wants to be a music teacher.

READING
 Our next story is called Ant.  It is a photo essay about the different kids of ants that are found throughout the world.  We will talk about how ants work together to get food, and about the kinds of things that ants eat..
            In phonics  we will be focusing on the word endings -nd, -nt, -mp, -ng, -nk, base words and endings in nouns -s, -es, -ies.
            Vocabulary words are antennae, colonies, larvae, cocoons, fungus, and tunnels.
            Comprehension strategies are rereading for understanding, cause and effect, and fact and opinion.
                        In grammar we will be working on singular and possessive nouns.


                               MATH
                                     Our new chapter is about solid figures.  We will be identifying, sorting naming attributes of solid figures.  Some of our new math vocabulary will be sphere, cone, cube, cylinder, pyramid, rectangular prism, face, edge, vertex and vertices.


  Student  of the Week
Ricco is the Student of the Week!  He likes to collect pokemon cards, do flips off the diving board and runs very fast.    His favorite animal is a guinea pig.  His favorite color is yellow.   When Ricco grows up he wants to be a Veteranraina.

Valentine’s Day Party
Thank you our Valentine’s Day party was great!  Thank you to Mrs. Schoeberle, Mrs. McGinley, and Mrs. Rossi who organized our games and ran our party.  Thank you to Mrs. Joseph, Mrs. Yacoub, Mrs. Schoeberle, Mrs. Rossi, Mrs. Mulcahy, Mrs. Rahman and Mrs. Sapeiga  who provided snacks.    A special Thank You to Mr. Hewawissa and Mrs. Schoeberle who covered all our valentine boxes.  Your support and generosity are greatly appreciated!  The children had a wonderful time!

READING
                       
Next week we will be reading three biographies.  We will learn what makes a good biography and trying writing a biography including a time line of the person's life. 
            In phonics  we will be focusing on the r-controlled vowels and the final syllables -tion and -ture.. 
            Vocabulary words are biograph, event, information, champion, fact and president.
            Comprehension strategies are rereading for understanding, evaluating, and visualizing.
                        In grammar we will be working on nouns and pronouns.


                               MATH

READING
                        Our next story is called Officer Buckle and Gloria.  It is a humorous fictional story about a policemen who loves to give safety tips to school children, but nobody every listens – until he brings a dog named Gloria.
            In phonics  we will be focusing on the the vowel pairs ow and oa, r-controlled vowels or and ar, and the endings -tion and -ture.
            Vocabulary words are accident, audience, officer, attention, commands, and safety.
            Comprehension strategies are drawing conclusions and monitor/clarify.
                        In grammar we will be working on nouns and pronouns .


                               MATH
                                    In math we worked on telling time after the hour in 5 minute increments, telling time before the hour, make reasonable estimates and determine how much time has passed from start to finish.  We will be finishing our chapter on time and having a chapter test next week.


  Student  of the Week
Adriana is the Student of the Week!  She likes to run very fast, wrestle with her brother and help others.    Her favorite animal is a golden retriever.  Her favorite color is purple.   When Adriana  grows up she wants to be a  Singer.

Valentine’s Day Party
On Tuesday, Feb. 14th we will have a Valentine's Day party.  Your child may bring one valentine for every child in the class (23 students). 

Service Project
We are collecting 100 can of food for a Food Pantry.  We will be collecting these items until our 100th day of school which will be on Feb. 8th.  Thank you.
