January 30, 2015

READING
            Next week we will be reading an article called Little Free Libraries.  We will be finding evidence in the text to answer questions.  In grammar, we will be learning about adverbs.

           
                   MATH
                                   
We have been working on adding 3-digit numbers with and without regrouping.  Next week we will continue adding those numbers along with subtracting 3-digit numbers.  It is very helpful to your child to practice their math facts so they can become more accurate and fluent.
                                   
  Student  of the Week
Eli is the Student of the Week!  He likes to read books, he is good at math and brass instruments.   His favorite animal is a dog. His favorite color is blue.   When Eli grows up, he wants to be a Teacher.





HELP NEEDED!!

READING
            Next week we will be learning about fact/opinion.  We will be writing an opinion paragraph.  In grammar, we will continue to work on prefixes, suffixes and root words. 


                               MATH
                          We finished our chapter on place value.  Our chapter test will be on Monday.  Our next chapter will be on three-digit addition and subtraction.  Please remember to practice addition and subtraction flashcards with your child.

Elizabeth Ide Book Drive
            We are collecting books to donate to Mr. Lazar’s previous school.  Please send in any books that are gently used to school by February 27th.  Thanks for your help!

  
Student  of the Week
Emily is the Student of the Week!  She likes to dance, eat spicy chicken wings and play with her friends.    Her favorite animal is a dog and her favorite color is blue.   When Emily grows up she wants to be a Veterinarian.

Recess
          We go outside for recess unless the wind chill is below 20 degrees.  The children need to bring snow pants and boots in order to play in the snow.  Any child who needs to stay inside for recess will need a doctor's note.

Valentine Shoe Boxes
Each child needs to bring in an empty shoe box for our valentines.  Please bring these in by January 30th.  We will need some volunteers to wrap the boxes with white paper.  Let me know if you can help us!

READING
             Next week we will be reading a story called Officer Aero and Mike.  It is a non-fiction story about a police officer and his dog.  We will be comparing it to the story Officer Buckle and Gloria.  We will work on the comprehension strategy of inferring.  In grammar we will work on prefixes and suffixes.

           
                   MATH
                                   
           
            We will continue to work on place value in math.  We will be working on number patterns, comparing numbers and skip counting by 5’s, 10’s and 100’s to 1,000.

  Student  of the Week
Shruthi is the Student of the Week!  She likes paint, play dress-up and squirt people with water guns.    Her favorite animal is a dog.  Her favorite color is pink.   When Shruthi grows up, she wants to be a Doctor.





Parent/Teacher Conferences
            Parent/teacher conferences will be held the week of February 9th.   I will send the link to sign up for a conference if I feel a conference is necessary at this time.  The email with the link will be sent on January 20th.  If I do not contact you, then I feel a conference is not necessary at this time.

READING

                        Due to a shortened  week, we will be continuing with Officer Buckle and Gloria activities.    Vocabulary words attention, swivel, commands and popped.
          Comprehension strategies are main idea and supporting details.
                   In grammar we will be working on contractions.

           
                   MATH
                                   
            In math we are going to finish our chapter on two-digit subtraction with a chapter test next week.  Our next chapter will be on place value to 1,000.

Reading Logs
          We did not have many children turn in their reading logs for the month of December.  Please remember to have your child read for 20 minutes daily and record it on their logs.  This is part of their homework assignments.  Our January logs will be due on February 2nd.
